 BLUE MUFFIN®     Arrowwood Viburnum

An exciting new compact selection of Arrowwood Viburnum! The perfect sized plant for residential landscapes. This compact beauty has loads of white spring flowers, and an impressive display of rich blue berries.

Makes a great low hedge or foundation plant. Good container growing plant. Attracts songbirds.

Viburnum sets more copious amounts of fruit when you have two distinct varieties of the species in close proximity. We recommend the cultivar 'Chicago Lustre' as a good pollinator.

Developed by Tom Watson.

Viburnum dentatum. 'Christom'

Hardiness: USDA Zone 3-7

Bloom Time: Summer flowers lead to intense blue fruit in late summer/fall

Bloom color:  Creamy white flowers contrast with glossy green foliage

Fruit: Fruit matures to blue in mid to late summer. Fruit set is greatly improved why there is another variety of Arrowwood Viburnum in the area for cross pollination.

Size: 5 to 7 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide – more compact than other arrowwood viburnum

Exposure: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Prefers well-drained conditions, adapts well to a variety of soils. Withstands high pH, heavy soils and vagaries of climate. Possibly one of the most durable Viburnums for the East and Midwest.

Pruning: Best if done immediately after flowering. Buds form summer prior to bloom.

Watering: Medium moisture.

Wildlife: Birds & other wildlife

Type: Deciduous

Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees & shrubs. Follow the label for recommended rate of application.

Uses: Hedges, groupings, masses, filler in the shrub border, screening and parking lots.

Other: Native to North America. Suckers freely from the base.

BLUE MUFFIN® viburnum is a useful new variety.  More compact than other Arrowwood viburnum, it fits easily into the residential landscape as a low hedge or foundation plant.  Easy to grow, with little or no maintenance required, BLUE MUFFIN® vibrunum adapts to most locations with full sun to partial shade.

Clean white flowers make for a crisp contrast with the glossy green leaves in early to mid-summer.  The remarkably intense blue fruit that inspired the BLUE MUFFIN®  viburnum name appear in late summer and fall.  The fruit add interest to the fall landscape, and attract songbirds to the garden.
