Hydrangea macrophylla

Bigleaf Hydrangea 

Family: Hydrangaceae

(Macro-phyll-a: large leafed)

 Bold and brightly colored flowers are unrivaled in the plant world. Flowers are either mopheads: snowball-like flowers, or lace caps. Select both flower types and a good range of colors! Flower buds are over-wintered on previous year's growth, so be careful not to prune off the buds. Hydrangea is fast and easy to grow. Zone 5, 3-5 feet, gr 1, cut, Full Sun Partial Shade

Hydrangea Collection of Compact Hydrangea

Tired of floppy, weak stemmed hydrangeas, especially at the time of shipping? Cityline is the answer. Developed in Europe where growth regulators are prohibited, so growers can finish a tight full plant without chemicals, shearing or pruning off flower buds.  Large flowers with vivid colors, strong stems and dark glossy foliage characterizes these new German hybrids. They’re all noted for excellent mildew resistance. Cityline creates a knockout one gallon! Developed by Franz-Xaver and Konrad Rampp of Germany.

CITYLINE® Berlin

(H. Mac. ‘Berlin Rabe’ pp#10,912 ) Tight, compact growth with large flowers characterizes this new German hybrid. Originally developed in Europe where growth regulators are prohibited, so growers can now finish a tight full plant without chemicals, shearing or pruning off flower buds. Discovered by Mike Dirr in the great coach, Vince Dooley's yard. Regardless of late frosts or tip die back it has not failed to bloom because it produces auxiliary flower buds. Extremely large blue or pink flower heads and robust deeply dentate foliage. A robust beauty. (Discontinued)

 ‘Generale Vicomtesse de Vibraye’
In all our travels, we’ve noted that this cultivar is one of the most reliable bloomers. This is a strong growing plant with large, violet blue mophead flowers on strong stems.

 'Hornli'  

A remarkable dwarf that we first saw in the Netherlands. This is the smallest, tightest little guy. Deep orange-red flowers. Only 12 to 24 inches tall. We bought our first plant at an auction for $75 (Discontinued)

 'Izu No Hana'  

(macrophylla) Translates to “Flowers of the Izu peninsula,”  but to me, it translates into an explosion of fireworks. The unique lace-cap flowers are comprised of a mass of showy, large, pink flowers, with even larger, pink, doubled sterile florets shooting out in various directions. Each floret contains 14 to 16 sepals compared to the customary 4. Dark glossy leaves. A remarkable plant. (Discontinued)

'Jogasaki'    

(macrophylla) Named after a town in the Izu peninsula of Japan, Jojasaki is yet another lace-cap with double florets. The silvery-pink florets contain 8 to 11 rounded sepals, and appear as miniature pink water lilies floating a top a pond. (Discontinued)

‘Kardinal' 

We consider this to be the best plant to come out of the “Teller” breeding program. The large flowers are composed of rich, velvet red to purple sterile florets that encircle and contrast attractive blue fertile flowers. Tolerating sunny conditions, but is at its best in full morning sun & afternoon shade. (Discontinued)

‘Komachi’  (H. macrophylla) This is the same plant that has been misnamed ‘Pretty Maiden. Stunning, irregular mop-head blooms with elongated, pink doubled flowers. Flower color ranges from clear blue to soft pink depending upon pH. The plant is a compact 3-4’ in height. (Discontinued)

'Lemon Wave'  

A wild psychedelic, variable blend of yellow, cream, white and green variegated foliage. Rivals the best of the variegated Hosta on the market. Mauve flowers are rare unless you live in a very mild climate, but who cares. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '99.

'Mme Emile Moulliere'

A prolific blooming, pure white mophead that’s considered superior to 'Sister Therese'. As the flowers age they become dotted with pink. Vigorous and cold resistant. The foliage is tough and glossy taking on russet and crimson autumn colors. (Discontinued)

‘Mousmee’

(H. macrophylla) A Japanese selection meaning girl, and what a beautiful girl she is! Big, purplish-pink lace-cap blooms accentuated with blue fertile flowers in the center. Quite remarkable. (Discontinued)

'Nigra'

Black stems contrast nicely with dusty-rose pink blooms. Free flowering and vigorous. (Discontinued)

 'Nikko Blue'  

Large blue or deep-lavender flower balls smother this prolific bloomer.

 'Parzifal' 

Of all the Hydrangea in our test garden, this plant stands out as something very special. Mallet calls it a plant with a great deal of personality. A solid plant with strong stems, and small clear green,  dentate leaves. The blooms are tight hemispheres of large size. Bloom color varies greatly according to the soil pH, and when grown a pH of 6 it has blooms of varied color ranging from dark pink to deep blue. 

‘Penny Mac’

Touted as a Hydrangea macrophylla that blooms on new wood. We’ve not seen it.  Selected by and named for Penny McHenry, past president of the American Hydrangea Society. (Discontinued)

'Pink Beauty'

Lovely clear pink flowers and attractive foliage. Similar to Preziosa. (Discontinued)

PINK SHIRA

Funny name, great plant, Pink Shira is a standout hydrangea noted for its compact growth, strong stems and reliable long-lasting blooms. Flowers emerge green and become infused with red and then transform to shades of rich pink. Acid soils deliver tones of lavender purple. Discovered by cut flower grower Tony Thompson of Kingston Spring, TN after watching it bloom for eight years straight. In that time it bloomed even when other varieties were damaged by frost. 

'Royal Purple'

Deep purple mopheads blooms. A dense compact growth habit.

 

‘Sadie Ray’

A reported bloomer that was discovered at a northern Indiana farmhouse.  Flowers pink or blue depending upon p.H. of the soil. Performs best in filtered or partial shade. Discovered by Tim Eizinger of Rochester, Indiana. (Discontinued)

‘Shamrock’
(H. Macrophylla ppaf, Canadian BRAF) A cool new Hydrangea in the Japanese tradition with masses of large, doubled, pink lace-cap flowers. Flowering begins in July and as the season progresses they transform into breathtaking shades of red and deep pink. On acid soils the flowers are more violet. Very floriferous and long blooming. More compact and tends to be more frost resistant than most Japanese types. Developed by the world famous French hydrangea expert Corinne Mallet. This superb new plant pays tribute to Association des amis de la Collections D'Hydrangea Shamrock (French Hydrangea Society) and a portion of the royalties are used to support their Hydrangea collection near Dieppe in Upper Normandy. We have been searching for this plant for years! A remarkable dwarf, ball shaped plant that blooms like crazy. The entire plant is engulfed by tightly packed, frizzy-looking, mauve and pink balls. An improvement on ‘Pia’, does not revert, and holds its blooms above the foliage. Originates from Denmark. (Discontinued)

'Variegata'  

If you like hosta you'll love this cream and green gem with mauve flowers. (Discontinued)
