Soil

Any well-drained soil will do; tolerates dry conditions once established, though not as well as more common types of barberry.

Pruning

Barberry does not take well to hard pruning. However, it may be trimmed as needed in late spring/early summer. Avoid cutting into thick wood unless you are removing entire branches.

Uses

With its prominent thorns, this barberry is effective for planting in parking lots and to limit foot traffic. Also a good choice for planting under windows to deter intruders.

Growing Tips

Benefits from mulch, especially in winter, to minimize damage to evergreen foliage.
