Check out Crusader® hawthorn - it's a thornless version of our native Crataegus crus-galli, a really adaptable species. Wet soils, dry soils, clay soils, salt - no problem. It can take air pollution, too, making it a good option for street plantings.
Some hawthorns are troubled by fire blight and other pathogens, but Crusader® is resistant to many of the diseases that can be a problem for Crateagus crus-galli.
