Description

A popular selection of our native inkberry holly noted for its attractive dark green foliage (hence the name 'Nigra') and compact habit. Foliage may turn purplish in winter. May sucker; excellent for damp sites. Dislikes high pH soils. Female selection will produce black berries if a male inkberry is in the vicinity.

Soil

Does best in moist (even very moist), slightly acidic soils.

Pruning

Naturally dense habit requires little pruning; may be trimmed after new growth has hardened off in late spring, though.
